The Fayetteville Boys & Girls Club is reviewing proposals from local contractors regarding the club’s future home in west Fayetteville.

“There’s a lot of interest in this showcase project,” said John Benberg, executive director for the FBGC.

The FBGC recently received a capital grant award of $9.26 million from the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation for the project. But for the construction to materialize, the FBGC must match a 20 percent restricted fund for building maintenance, repair and equipment, as well as funds for construction costs not covered by the grant. Since Reynolds Foundation projects do not support funding for anything outside of 10 feet from the structure, the FBGC must also come up with funding for roads, a parking lot and landscaping. The total fund-raising goal could be more than $1 million.

The new facility is planned for a 20-acre tract off Wedington Road west of Interstate 540. It will be more than 80,000 SF, complete with three gymnasiums, a leisure pool, a classroom, a teaching kitchen, a dance and gymnastics area, an arts and crafts area, three different boys’ and girls’ core area, a 22-station computer lab, a library, a community meeting room, a locker room and offices. It will also offer some unique activities such as climbing on a climbing wall.

FBGC, next to Harmon Field off California Drive, serves more than 3,000 members and expects large growth with a new facility.

The Farnsworth Group of Fayetteville is the engineering firm for the project.

Benberg said he hopes the initial construction will begin by late spring or early summer. The project will likely take between 14 and 20 months, so it should be complete by late 2002 or early 2003.
