Canadian Expansion
Wal-Mart Stores Inc. announced plans on July 23 to open a store on Canada’s Prince Edward Island, just north of Nova Scotia.
“We’re now in every Canadian province,” says Dale Ingram, director of international public affairs for Wal-Mart.
Construction is expected to begin this fall. The new 105,000-SF store is expected to open in the spring of 1999 in Charlottestown, Prince Edward Island. The store will employ about 120 people.
Prince Edward Island, at about the size of Rhode Island, is Canada’s smallest province. It has a population of 137,000.
Wal-Mart currently operates 145 stores in Canada.
“We have no plans for Supercenters in Canada,” says Edward Gould, a spokesman for Wal-Mart Canada. “The traditional Wal-Mart store has proven to be tremendously popular with Canadian customers since the first days.”
