The Northwest Arkansas Business Journal has learned that Wal-Mart Stores Inc. CEO Doug McMillon and his wife, Shelley, have signed an agreement to donate the first $1 million to establish the School of Global Retail Operations & Innovation at the University of Arkansas.

Although details have not yet been released, the couple signed the agreement April 4.

Sam M. Walton College of Business Dean Eli Jones wrote in an email to Walton College staff and faculty: “The school has been a dream for many people in the college, and this gift gets us closer to that dream. More to come, and lots of people to thank for helping to secure this key donation.”

Jones did not immediately respond to phone messages seeking a comment.

David Speer, director of communications for the Walton College, said the project is subject to approval by the UA Board of Trustees.

Although the UA does not currently have a school of retail, a retail major is offered through the marketing track at Walton College.
