Republican John Shipman has dropped out of the Craighead County Sheriff’s race. The 50-year-old told Talk Business & Politics he needs to refocus his energies on his family and his job as a police officer.

“We need to take a step back and refocus,” Shipman said. “There are other things that require my attention at this time.”

The move leaves incumbent Marty Boyd, D-Jonesboro, as the only candidate in the race. Shipman’s name will still appear on the ballot, Craighead County Clerk Kade Holiday said. His withdrawal came after the state mandated withdrawal period of 75 days before the election.

Shipman gained national attention after he began his signature “Back to Blue” program last fall. A 17-year veteran with the Jonesboro Police Department, he made shirts displaying the slogan to help facilitate better relations between law enforcement and the public.

Soon he was producing bumper stickers, hoodies, and other items that are now shipped around the country. It also expanded beyond awareness, he said. Shipman helps the homeless and mental ill find resources, he said. Shipman said he hasn’t ruled out a future run for public office.

“I don’t want to say any door is shut for good,” he said.
