Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art is hitting the Open Road next week, starting on Monday (March 21) and extending through Sunday (March 27).

The temporary exhibit will kick off with Monday’s “The Open Road: Photography and the American Road Trip,” an examination of several photographs in the exhibition along with discussion of the photographers’ road trips and how these experiences influenced their work and impacted the idea of the American road trip.

This will be followed on Thursday (March 24) with “The Open Road Film Series: ‘Dim the Lights’ and ‘The Wild Angels,’” from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

During this session, local filmmaker Dwight Chalmers will present his short film “Dim the Lights” (8 minutes), followed by a discussion on the art of road films. Chalmers will conclude by hosting a showing of the 1966 Roger Corman film The Wild Angels. The Wild Angels was produced three years prior to Easy Rider and was the first film to associate actor Peter Fonda with Harley-Davidson motorcycles and 1960s counterculture.

On Friday (March 25), Crystal Bridges will host “Art by the Glass: Think Outside the App” from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. This “social class” inspired by The Open Road exhibition will use everyday materials to create DIY filters, and give attendees the chance to create images with their smartphones. All materials, excluding smartphone, will be included with the $45 cost of admission ($36 for members) along with two glasses of wine and hors d’oeuvres.
