The county clerk’s offices around Northeast Arkansas were busy Tuesday and Wednesday as nearly 100 candidates turned in paperwork to seek municipal office this year.

On Wednesday, a third candidate filed for Harrisburg mayor while a mayor filed for a city council seat in Bono.

Charles E. Brietz turned in a petition to seek the Harrisburg job, election officials there said. Brietz joins incumbent Randy Mills and former mayor Donald “Buzzy” Faulkner in running for the seat so far. There will also be a race for Harrisburg city clerk as incumbent Pat King and June Long filed for the seat.

Bono Mayor Billy Stephens also filed for office Wednesday. However, he filed for the Ward 1, Position 1 seat on the city council in the Craighead County town. Danny Shaw and Kenny Pillow are the only candidates to file so far for the mayor’s race.

Also, another former mayor also filed Wednesday to return to his old job. Ralph Wells turned in paperwork at the Osceola courthouse to run for mayor in Leachville.

Incumbent Sheila Spurlock, who filed earlier in the period, defeated Wells during the 2006 general election.
