Walmart to deliver Subway sandwiches with online orders in select stores
Walmart has partnered with Connecticut-based Subway to deliver sandwiches to customers through the retailer’s online ordering app. The announcement was made Thursday (June 4) during Walmart’s shareholders week events held in Bentonville.
The retail giant has been testing the delivery of Subway sandwiches in select test markets in Connecticut and Dallas, and plans to soon offer the service in more than 1,400 stores where there are Subways inside a Walmart Supercenter. The move marks the first restaurant integration within Walmart’s express delivery.
In Arkansas, there are 7 Walmart supercenter locations with a Subway franchise tenant. The super center stores are in Benton, Clarksville, 2100 N. 62nd St. in Fort Smith, Baseline Road in Little Rock, North Little Rock, Monticello, and Newport.
When the service goes live the option will show up in the Walmart app for order delivery.
Tracey Poulliot, executive vice president of e-commerce at Walmart U.S., said Walmart customers who access the app will see the Subway show up in their local market. At that point they can tap on the Subway icon and start their order. Greg Cathey, senior vice president of e-commerce fulfillment transformation at Walmart U.S., said the idea began last fall as the company started thinking through this concept.
“It took tremendous focus, collaboration, and execution behind the scenes, but we’re always looking for new ways to make our customers’ life easier, and this restaurant express delivery is a great example of that, so it gives customers options to get fresh restaurant meal delivery,” he said.
He also said Walmart is open to more expansion of prepared food delivery services from its Spark drivers with other restaurant tenants within its stores.
