Walmart is closing a corporate office in Charlotte, N.C., and will cut some jobs and move others to offices in Bentonville and California. Walmart would not disclose how many jobs would be cut, but published reports suggested it would be in the hundreds.
Walmart Chief People Officer Donna Morris made the announcement in an internal email to U.S. employees on Tuesday (Feb. 4). The email was made available to Talk Business & Politics by Walmart.
Morris said the changes are designed to increase collaboration, innovation, and speed. She said as the new corporate campus opens in Bentonville, Walmart is also opening offices in Sunnyvale, Calif., and Bellevue, Wash., expanding the office in Hoboken, N.J., and expanding the fashion office in New York City.
“Our value and culture are strategic differentiators for us as a company, and they are fostered by being together. We’ve already seen the benefits of having more teams working together in person, and today we are sharing another step that will help accelerate our momentum,” Morris noted.
The memo said some corporate office employees based in Hoboken and some in Dallas, Atlanta, and the Toronto Global office are being asked to relocate to work in Bentonville or Sunnyvale. Morris said some roles have been eliminated in the streamlining process. Walmart did not disclose a timeline for the job relocations.
Morris said Walmart is helping with severance pay and relocation support with employees who are part of the closure and relocation process.
Walmart first announced the plans for employees to transfer to Bentonville or Sunnyvale in May 2024. Walmart asked then that all employees still working remotely return to their office full time.
