Mitch Mathis selected as AD for Williams Baptist University

Williams Baptist University has hired Mitch Mathis as the Eagles’ athletic director. He started his new position on Aug. 1.

Mathis comes to WBU after a five-year tenure at Arkansas State University, where he was an instructor in teaching, coaching, and health education. Prior to his time in Jonesboro, he was the boys’ athletic coordinator at Clear Creek Independent School District in League City, Texas, where he taught health and fitness and teen leadership courses.

He also serves as the executive director of SHAPE Arkansas, a non-profit organization of teachers, researchers, college students and other professionals that network and advocate for physical education and health across the state. In this role, he acts as a liaison between the national association and state members, oversees the budget and secures sponsorships for two state conventions each year.

“We are grateful that Mitch Mathis has joined our team as our new athletic director,” said WBU President Dr. Stan Norman. “Mitch brings a wealth of experience, a strong vision for the future, and a deep commitment to our mission of integrating faith and excellence in athletics. His leadership will undoubtedly inspire our student-athletes to achieve their highest potential both on and off the field.”

Before his time in Texas, Mathis was an instructor and advising coordinator at Arkansas State University from 2003 to 2014. During this period, he also served as the Arkansas Juniors Volleyball Club director (2010-2013) and an administrator for the Arkansas Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (2009-2012).

Mathis received his bachelor’s degree in education with a focus on physical education/health and a master’s degree in sport management and administration from Arkansas State.
