The Rogers Lowell Chamber (RLC) is sponsoring an event to enhance civic literacy among young people leading up to the National Civics Bee.

The RLC Civics Bee, open to all middle school students in Arkansas., promotes civic knowledge and engagement. The initiative encourages 6th, 7th, and 8th graders to delve into civics, submit essays and engage with their communities.

Students submit 500-word essays online, addressing local community issues and proposing solutions. The essay portal is open until Feb. 19, with participants standing a chance to win cash prizes.

Judges will select 20 finalists for an in-person RLC Civics Bee event at Heritage High School in Rogers on April 2 — the top 10 move on to the state competition on May 14.

Sara Lynn Geiger, vice president of government relations for RLC, said informed and active citizens contribute to a strong country, economy and workforce, highlighting the role of civic knowledge in national prosperity.

Participants can win cash prizes at the local, state and potentially national levels. The first-place state winner and guardian earn a trip to Washington, D.C., to compete in the National Civics Bee for a $50,000 prize later this fall.

This initiative aligns with the broader goal of fostering civic engagement, knowledge, and responsibility among the younger generation.
