Walmart Stores across the country began limiting the sale of ammunition to three boxes per customer per day as consumer demand as outpaced supplies in recent weeks.

"We instituted this policy Jan. 24 and continue to work closely with our suppliers to get the shelves stocked," said Wal-Mart spokesman, Ashley Hardie.

Retailers across the country continue to report record gun and ammunition sales following the Newtown, Conn. mass shooting that has fueled a heated debate over gun ownership.

Wal-Mart is the nation's largest seller of guns and ammunition and recently met with Vice President Joe Biden in Washington about the gun control topic he was challenged to address by President Barack Obama following the school massacre in Newtown, just two weeks before Christmas.

"Over the years we have been very purposeful about striking the right balance between serving hunters and sportsmen and ensuring that we sell firearms responsibly. In fact, we became a charter member of Mayor Bloomberg’s coalition against illegal guns and adopted the 10-point code established by the Responsible Firearms Retailer Partnership that goes beyond what the law requires," Wal-Mart spokesman David Tovar said ahead of the meeting in Washington.

Two years ago Wal-Mart brought guns back to many of its U.S. stores after pulling them in 2006 from all by 1,300 locations as the retailer reduced products and store clutter.

Since then Wal-Mart has said gun sales have been strong.
