Arkansas artists’ roots are at ‘Home’

FAYETTEVILLE — University of Arkansas’ Anne Kittrell Art Gallery and sUgAR Projects have announced Home, a group exhibition consisting of nine artists, all of whom have Arkansas roots. The artists were given a time frame of one month and asked to make art in their chosen medium based on the word “home.”

sUgAR stands for University of Arkansas Student Gallery, a student-run gallery exhibition space. Once located just off the Bentonville square, it’s now a pop-up gallery.

The Home works will be on display Aug. 15-21 and include pieces by The City Wire’s own Kevin Arnold, David Carpenter, Peter Goff, Michael Davis Gutiérrez, Don Lee, Erin Lorenzen, Ginny Sims, Kat Wilson  and Chadd Wilson

Viewing hours in the Anne Kittrell Art Gallary are Monday-Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. A closing reception for the artists is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Aug. 21. The event is free and open to the public. The gallery is located on the fourth floor of the Arkansas Union in the middle of the UA campus.

Marzelle (Kealiher) Williams was born in Enid, Okla., the daughter of farmer. She grew up on a wheat, cattle and alfalfa farm and attended small rural schools before finally enrolling at Phillips University in Enid, where she received her first formal instruction in art. Since then she has taken workshops from various well-known artist such as Carolyn Anderson, Pam Ingles and Joseph Lorusso, to name just a few.

Catching wind of exciting new art opportunities in Northwest Arkansas, Williams moved to Bella Vista in June 2011 and is excited to be in a part of a supportive and growing arts community.

The works displayed at this Bentonville exhibition capture her style and interests. She is captivated by the human figure and portraiture and strives to depict
emotion, or just the mood of a moment in time. Williams is presenting a one-woman show at Studio 124 in downtown Bentonville that started with the city’s First Friday celebration Aug. 2 and continues through Aug. 18.

18th annual Regional Juried Exhibition

The 18th annual Regional Juried Exhibition is taking place this month where it all began — the Arts Center of the Ozarks. A group known as the Artists of Northwest Arkansas is presenting 77 works ranging from watercolor, oil, acrylic and mixed media to pastel, charcoal, colored pencil, photography, wood and clay. Featured artists include Carol Dickie, L.S. Eldridge, Don Effinger, Gim Goff, Deirdre West, Cheryl Barton, Martin E. Peerson and many more.
