BENTONVILLE — For something different in terms of entertainment, Drum Corps International will present Music on the Move, a performance of several highly trained drum and bugle corps Tuesday night (July 17) at Bentonville High School Tiger Stadium, 1901 S.E. J St.

As a youth activity, the world of competitive drum and bugle corps is an intense, choreographed musical experience staged on football fields across the country. They’re not just bands, they’re organizations of young people who, through their work on the field, develop life skills including self-discipline, teamwork and leadership.

Organized into three competitive classes, each drum corps is unique in how its management, educational staff and members approach the drum corps experience. World Class corps can have up to 150 members. Open Class corps have a minimum of 30 members and up to a maximum of 150.

This is the first year DBI has come to Bentonville, and with good attendance, locals are already hoping to bring it back. Some of the drum and bugle corps performing Tuesday are Genesis, Cascades, Colts, Glassmen, Troopers, The Academy, Blue Stars, Blue Knights and Carolina Crown.

The show is form 7-11 p.m. Tickets are $20 for general admission and $30 for seats with backs near mid-field. More ticket information can be found here.

Impact: They’re in the gate

FAYETTEVILLE — The Arkansas Support Network’s Friday night (July 20) fundraiser borrows a theme that’s become increasingly popular lately— horse racing.

A Night at the Races, to be held at the Fayetteville Town Center, will feature three videotaped horse races shown on a big screen. Attendees may bet on the pre-recorded horse races and if their horse wins, they’ll receive a prize. Tickets to the event are $30 per person for general admission or $50 for VIP admission. For those unable to attend, but could like to bet on a race, tickets are $10.

The evening also includes a silent auction, eats, a cash bar and music by the popular local classic rock band Big'uns. Cox Communication’s Kelly Zega will emcee.

Proceeds will benefit the Arkansas Support Network’s KidsClub Program, a summer day camp for children with disabilities. The free camp provides an enriching and fun environment for children who would otherwise spend their summers at home, often without contact with other children. Camps are held in Fayetteville, Springdale, Rogers and Siloam Springs.

For tickets or information about the event, contact LaDonna Meredith at (479) 927-4100 or [email protected].

Impact: Safety center dreams big

FAYETTEVILLE — On Saturday night (June 20) the Children’s Safety Center will take over the Fayetteville Town Center for its signature Dream Big event.

From 7-11 p.m., guests can enjoy live music by Mr. Happy, dinner by Mojito's, drinks, a silent auction and a chance to take home themed baskets.

The brightly colored children’s handprints add to the decor for this party and help keep the Children’s Safety Center’s mission at front of mind. The nonprofit center started in 1997 gives abused children one place where they can be interviewed by law enforcement, child protective services, victim service providers, prosecutors, medical personnel, mental health professionals and community volunteers, thus avoid further trauma.

Tickets for Dream Big are $50 each. More information is available at (479) 872-6183 or here.

Art: Locals gather to aid influential artist

FAYETTEVILLE — Local artist Eugene Sargent has touched the lives of countless residents in Fayetteville in one way or another, though they might not know it.

He is the sculptor behind the 45-foot worm and the unique benches near the castle at Wilson Park, the giant locomotive at the Botanical Garden of the Ozarks and the giant butterfly bench at Leverett Elementary School commissioned in memory of former student Olivia Ray. He’s put his mark on the city with these and countless other interesting works around town.

Now Sargent, who was recently diagnosed with lymphoma, has inspired a group of local residents to conduct a fundraiser to help defray some of his treatment costs. The event, A Night for Eugenius, starts at 5:30 p.m. Sunday at Greenhouse Grille in Fayetteville. The affair will entail live music, a raffle and silent and live auctions. You’ll find more info on the event’s Facebook page.
