Artists produce 15 works in one month for exhibit at ACO

SPRINGDALE — The summer months of July and August can be a sluggish time for regional galleries, but those brave enough to withstand the intense heat can find refuge in a particularly intriguing joint exhibition taking place this month (July) at the Arts Center of the Ozarks in Springdale.

 Megan Chapman and Stewart Bremner’s dual exhibition A Place Called Home runs through July 27 at ACO, with a reception for the artists from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday night (July 10).
 
Chapman, a painter from Fayetteville, and Bremner, a photographer from Edinburgh, Scotland, worked in a collaborative effort early this summer to create a group of paintings that reflect and capitalize on the working methods of two very disparate visual artists.
Working side by side in mixed media on panel, fifteen 12-inch by 12-inch paintings were produced over the course of a month.

The intent behind these fifteen pieces was to visually interpret the elements of landscape through an abstract approach to painting. As a result of this perceptual response to nature, there is contained within these fifteen pieces the familiar remnants of sky and land that highlight not just the regional differences between these two artists but their similarities as well.

FAYETTEVILLE — Later in the month, the University of Arkansas Student Gallery will host Black Hearts, a one-night, “pop-up” exhibition of recent work by Sarah Leflar.

Leflar received her master’s of fine arts degree in sculpture from the Rhode Island School of Design and later studied law at the University of Connecticut School of Law. After spending years as an attorney she returned to art and is presently working and exhibiting her sculpture work all over the state.

She has recently displayed her work at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff and the Historical Arkansas Museum in Little Rock.

Leflar’s sculpture is based on the repurposing of small intimate “kitch” objects as a way of re-examining the familiar in a strange new context. Incorporating found objects and materials into minimalist formats. Her work can also be viewed online here and here.

This one-night event is part of the sUgAR Projects exhibition series, featuring a variety of arts programming for galleries and alternative exhibition spaces throughout Northwest Arkansas.
The evening at Leflar’s studio will also feature a live musical performance by Little Rock native David Slade of the band American Princes. The exhibition and performance are free and open to the public.

East/West: A Survey of Contemporary Printmaking

FAYETTEVILLE — Throughout the month of July an extensive survey of printmaking practices will be exhibited in the hallway cases of the Fine Arts
Center on the campus at the University of Arkansas. The work being shown represents 100 of the most respected and prominent printmakers/educators currently working in all 50 states, coming together to showcase traditional and new approaches to printmaking.

Everything from lithography, intaglio, woodcut, silkscreen, archival pigment, to hybrid, intaglio types, and photo-relief prints will be on display. Over the last few decades, the landscape of traditional forms
of printmaking techniques have shifted and contemporary advancements in image making have expanded and transformed this medium in radical
new directions.

The idea behind East/West was not to present a “theme” but to simply reveal examples of these various innovative printmaking processes being used by other educators who are dramatically influencing the field today.
