North Carolina-based Gaston College has decided to start up a college sports program and has hired a former Arkansas State University head basketball coach that led the program to its last NCAA Tournament birth in 1999.

Arkansas native David “Dickey” Nutt has been hired as a basketball coach and associate athletic director. He will reportedly be paid $80,000 per year.

Nutt has 279 wins as well as an award for being “Coach of the Year” at ASU in the Sun Belt Conference, according to the college. Nutt coached at ASU from 1995-2008. He coached at Southeast Missouri State from 2009-2015.

He is currently a special assistant to the head coach at Cleveland State University, where he plans to finish the season. Nutt also has stops at Oklahoma State, Stetson and Florida State on his coaching resume.

Nutt is the brother of former University of Arkansas head football coach Houston Nutt.

The Gaston College Board of Trustees voted unanimously in November to add athletics. Gaston College has been without athletics for nearly 50 years and when Dr. John Hauser became President last June, he began the process to end that drought. Former Duke Blue Devil and NBA player Gene Banks has been hired as the school’s athletic director.
