Mercy Northwest adds neurosurgical team to specialties

Mercy Northwest Arkansas announced the addition of Dr. Alejandro Castellvi and nurse practitioner Paula Stephens to Mercy Clinic Neurology—Physicians Plaza in Rogers.

Mercy said Castellvi provides surgical treatment of conditions such as stroke and adult scoliosis as well as serious neurological illnesses and injuries to patients who formerly had to be sent elsewhere. Mercy said the new addition to its specialties is key for local patients who will be able to remain close to home for the services and treatments they may require.

“Keeping patients in the community is beneficial for patients and their families,” Castellvi said in a statement. “I’m excited to be able to offer a higher level of care that hasn’t been available in this community for several years.”

Stephens said keeping patients within the community can improve outcomes and it makes treatment easier for patients and their families.

The neurosurgical practice can help patients with a wide variety of complaints, from nonsurgical treatments for back pain to stroke treatment and surgical treatment of cranial issues.

Castellvi earned his medical degree from St. Matthew’s University School of Medicine in Grand Cayman, British West Indies. He completed a residency in neurosurgery and a fellowship in complex spine surgery at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh.

Stephens has worked in neurosurgical medicine since 2009. She earned a bachelor’s of science in nursing and a “Doctor of Nursing Practice” certification in gerontology from the University of Arkansas. She is board certified as an adult-gerontology acute care nurse practitioner. She also has experience in trauma and intensive care.
