Joseph Rupe had been operating his family business, Jody’s Auto Service Centers, for about 20 years. He wanted to get into the roofing, solar panel and exteriors business, however. The second-generation small business owner opened Horizon Roofing, Solar and Exteriors in April 2023.
The Fort Smith-based company grew rapidly, going from one employee to 20. It now offers services in Fort Smith, Hot Springs and Northwest Arkansas.
“We install roofs, solar panels, battery backup systems, generators, insulation, siding, windows, gutters, fencing, and decks, providing both residential and commercial services,” Rupe said. “What started as a roofing, solar, and exteriors company has expanded to include insulation, allowing us to offer comprehensive energy efficiency solutions.”
Horizon is the first Arkansas solar company to become Tesla Energy Certified, meaning its customers receive advanced solar solutions available. The company builds and restores homes and works closely with HVAC professionals to create energy-efficient environments.
From 2023 to 2024, Horizon’s revenue increased 97%, and its net profit rose 510%. The company seeks out the latest technological breakthroughs and products.
“Our success is driven by our core philosophy — always do the right thing,” Rupe said. “We advocate for our customers in insurance claims, ensuring they receive fair settlements for storm damage. Instead of engaging in aggressive door-knocking sales tactics, we build trust first, business second. This approach has helped us establish long-term relationships with homeowners and businesses alike.”
The rapid population growth in Northwest Arkansas has been a key driver of the company’s business expansion. Many of the people moving here come from places with high solar adoption rates, and they seek out companies like Horizon, he said.
There have been challenges in the industry on the state level, however. Arkansas has been slower to embrace solar energy, and the September 2024 net metering law change has made it more difficult for homeowners to see immediate financial returns on solar investments. Previously, customers could sell excess energy back to the grid at the same rate they paid for it, but now they are compensated at wholesale rates, Rupe said.
“Despite this, we continue to educate Arkansans on the long-term benefits of solar, energy independence, and efficiency upgrades through chamber events, home builders associations and community expos,” he said.
In the next decade, Horizon hopes to expand its service area, grow its employee base and find more innovative technologies to offer its customers.
