Many single mothers and their children were struggling in the Bentonville area in the early 1990s. They had trouble finding safe and stable housing. A group of people came together in 1993 and formed Havenwood, a nonprofit whose mission is to help mothers get back on their feet and build better futures for their families.

“At Havenwood, we provide transitional housing and support for single moms and their kids,” said Jim Evans, executive director. “But we do so much more than just offer a place to stay — we walk alongside these women as they work toward stability, independence and a future they’re proud of. Over the years, we’ve grown from just providing housing to offering a full wraparound support system. That includes career development, financial literacy, parenting support and an incredible community that lifts these women up.”

The nonprofit offers a two-year program for women who are accepted. The goal is to provide them and their children with stable housing, while also creating a sound financial environment to support their families, Evans said.

“Every year, we see more moms graduate from our program, find stable jobs, and move into permanent housing,” he said. “Some go back to school, others get promotions, and many stay connected to help support new residents. We’ve also built stronger partnerships in the community, which means more resources, more opportunities and more ways to make a lasting difference for our families.”

Havenwood is more than a shelter. It’s a stepping stone, Evans said. The goal is to give participants the tools to succeed in life. The organization has a community-driven approach. The moms aren’t just residents. They’re part of a family.

“Northwest Arkansas has been an incredible place for Havenwood to grow,” he said. “This community truly cares, and it shows in the way businesses, churches and individuals step up to support our moms. We’ve been able to expand our reach, strengthen our programs, and provide more opportunities because of the generosity and heart of this region.”

During the next several years, Havenwood hopes to expand its housing so it can aid more families. The nonprofit also hopes to create more partnerships with local businesses. Furthermore, it plans to advocate for changes that will lead to more affordable housing.

“We love collaborating with and supporting other incredible organizations in Northwest Arkansas,” Evans said. “Personally, one of my biggest passions is lifting up fellow nonprofits in our community. We frequently partner with Saving Grace NWA, Cradle of Hope, and Dress for Success, among others, to provide even more resources and opportunities for the families we serve.”

Editor’s note: This company is a finalist for the Northwest Arkansas Outstanding Business Awards — Nonprofit Business category. Winners will be announced at a luncheon on April 9.
