A Siloam Springs gym was selling all of its weightlifting equipment, and Bobby Bittle saw an opportunity. For more than three years, Bentonville had been without a gym where heavy weightlifters and professionals could train.
Bittle decided to open J Street Gym in 2018. The gym’s success was almost immediate, and soon he began to partner with other investors and open other gyms across Northwest Arkansas. Barbell Gyms of NWA was born.
“The success of that first location led to the opening of a second location in Springdale in 2019, in partnership with Ross Jackson, followed by a third location in Rogers in 2020,” Bittle said. “Over time, changes in our partnership allowed us to explore new opportunities, which led to the successful opening of HWY12 Gym in Bentonville, in partnership with Ross Jackson and new partner James Ford. In 2018, our life partner, Carolyn Jameson, joined us, and she has been a critical part of our success with her unwavering support of our growth. Together, we have been able to navigate challenges and expand our presence.”
The company hasn’t stopped growing. In February 2024, it opened Bella Vista Barbell, and plans are underway to expand it by an additional 5,000 square feet. In July 2024, Barbell Gyms opened Chop Barbell, followed by the opening of Chop Headquarters in November 2024.
“Our goal is to continue growing and providing the best fitness experiences for our community by staying committed to excellence in all aspects of our gyms,” Bittle said. “This includes constantly improving our facilities with state-of-the-art equipment, expanding our spaces to accommodate more members, and offering diverse programs that cater to a wide range of fitness goals. Whether someone is just starting their fitness journey or looking to push their limits, we strive to create an environment that fosters growth, progress, and a sense of belonging.”
As the company has grown, it has focused on adding specialized areas like recovery zones, more strength training equipment, and upgraded locker rooms to enhance the overall experience.
“We also plan to increase our community involvement by hosting more events, collaborating with local businesses, and supporting causes that align with our mission of promoting health and wellness,” Bittle said.
He said the goal of their company is to not just be a place where people only workout.
“Ultimately, our commitment is to not just be a gym,” he said, “but a cornerstone of the community — offering a place where individuals feel empowered, motivated, and supported every step of the way. By continuing to meet the evolving needs of our members, we aim to set the standard for fitness in Northwest Arkansas and beyond.”
