Walter Harris, president and CEO of the Heartland Whole Health Institute (HWHI) in Bentonville, announced Friday (March 21) he is retiring.

HWHI is a nonprofit founded in 2019 by philanthropist Alice Walton. The institute works with health systems, communities, policymakers and employers to redesign care delivery and advocate for payment models to improve health and reduce costs.

The institute is located near the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art and the forthcoming Alice L. Walton School of Medicine (AWSOM). HWHI is a standalone sister organization to AWSOM.

In a LinkedIn post on Friday, Harris declared:

New Position – CEO of MY RETIREMENT!

After much reflection, I am writing to announce my retirement.

Walter Harris

As I look back on my career, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunities I’ve had to serve my country in the military and to contribute to the field of organizational development and healthcare. These experiences have shaped not just my professional life, but also my personal values and aspirations. I have been fortunate to work alongside some of the most amazing and dedicated leaders and hard working staff, and I will always cherish the networks, friendships and collaborations we’ve built over the years.

Although I’ve been blessed to experience many successes, the highlights of my career has been my involvement in leading at the senior executive level of government in public health, the development of two medical schools and the establishment of health system in middle America. These are efforts aimed at improving health outcomes, broadening access and making health care more affordable for all.

Most importantly, I’ve had the honor and privilege of coaching, mentoring and supporting hundreds of future leaders over my 30 year career. Witnessing their growth and passion has been incredibly rewarding and gives me hope for the future.

As I transition into retirement, I am excited to explore new opportunities, spend time with family, and focus on my health and well-being. I encourage everyone to prioritize self-care and health, especially during these trying times.

I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their support and camaraderie throughout my career.

Wishing you all continued success and fulfillment in your future.

Harris started with HWHI in December 2021. He previously was senior vice president for administration and finance and COO at Kaiser Permanente; associate vice president for administration and operations and COO at The George Washington University; and global chief operating officer at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

A spokesperson for the institute said Harris’ retirement was announced over the last month internally and to community partners. Dr. Claude Pirtle has been serving as interim executive director and was recognized in his interim role at a Greater Bentonville Chamber of Commerce event earlier this month.
