New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine at Arkansas State University (NYITCOM at A-State) will celebrate “Match Day” for the Class of 2025 on Friday (March 21) at the Red Wolves Convention Center at Embassy Suites in Jonesboro.

Students will open their Match envelopes to learn their residency placement. Many of the student doctors, many of whom have local ties, will stay in the region for their specialty training.

During their final year of medical school, student doctors apply to and interview for residencies. Once they’ve completed their interviews, student doctors rank their preferred programs, and the programs rank their preferred candidates they’ve interviewed.

The National Residency Matching Program (NRMP) then uses an algorithm to “match” candidates with programs based on rankings.

Following their completion of medical school, physicians are required to do postgraduate specialty training, which is known as residency or graduate medical education (GME). That training typically lasts between three to seven years, depending upon the specialty.

In 2024, approximately 40,000 student doctors across the country participated in Match Day.
