Arkansas 91 crossing the focus of public safety study
The Northeast Arkansas Regional Transportation Planning Commission is proceeding with the second phase of the Safe Transportation for Every Pedestrian (STEP) Innovation Study involving Arkansas 91, Jonesboro MPO Director Cecelie Cochran said.
The Arkansas 91 STEP Study includes installing a temporary pedestrian crossing near the intersection of Arkansas 91 (E. Johnson Avenue) and State Street to help increase public safety. This location has been identified as a high volume area due to its connection between Arkansas State University and Downtown Jonesboro.
Consultants will be monitoring usage of the temporary crossing as well as public response and motor vehicle behavior.
In conjunction, an Arkansas 141 STEP Study identifying pedestrian and bicyclist safety issues and potential countermeasures along Arkansas 141 (North Church Street) between Allen Avenue and Alpine Street is nearing completion, and will be presented to city council once finalized.
“We encourage members of the public to exercise patience and stay vigilant while navigating on the road. It’s our duty as a community to help ensure that everyone can arrive to their destination safely regardless of mode of travel,” Cochran said.
