24 water well projects completed in 10 Arkansas counties
A nationwide nonprofit organization recently completed 24 water well projects in 10 Arkansas counties.
The Water Well Trust completed the projects with grant money from USDA’s Household Water Well Systems Grant program, according to a news release.
In 2014, the USDA gave a $140,000 matching grant to the Water Well Trust to “increase potable water availability to rural households” in five Northwest Arkansas Counties — Franklin, Benton, Madison, Marion and Crawford — and Sequoyah County, Okla., according to the release.
In 2015, five more Arkansas counties were added: Carroll, Johnson, Logan, Searcy and Washington.
The wells were drilled or restored to provide clean water to 73 Arkansans, including 31 children and four veterans, the release shows.
The USDA grant money is used to provide 20-year loans at 1% interest to applicants seeking new or improved wells.
Funding is limited to $11,000 per household.
In 2010, Water Systems Council established the Water Well Trust.
