OSHA lists most cited workplace safety violations of 2016
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has released its annual list of the 10 most-cited safety and health violations.
The numbers are current through Sept. 30, 2016, and are assigned a scored rating based on the number of citations reported.
Fall protection ranked No. 1 at 6,929 citations during FY 2016, an increase of 3.1% from last year’s 6,721 citations.
For the fourth time since 2013, the hazard communication category, which requires chemical manufacturers to classify the hazards of chemicals they produce or import and provide information to their employees regarding them, held the No. 2 spot with 5,677 citations reported.
Scaffold hazards registered at No. 3 with 3,906 citations, respiratory protection was No. 4 at 3,585 and control of hazardous energy (lockout/tagout) general industry was No. 5 with 3,414 citations.
The rest of the top 10 are:
- powered industrial trucks, 2,860 citations
- ladders, 2,639 citations
- machine guarding, 2,451 citations
- electrical wiring, 1,940 citations
- electrical, general requirements, 1,704 citations
OSHA’s Director of Enforcement Programs Thomas Galassi said while the rankings may change each year, the organization sees very little change in the types of violations reported, “any one of which could result in a fatality or severe injury.”
