BioDetection Instruments Receives Grant
Fayetteville-based BioDetection Instruments was recently awarded a Small Business Innovation and Research Phase I grant by the Food and Drug Administration. Awarded on September 10, 2015, the $150,000 grant will help the company in the development of a screening system for food pathogen.
According to a press release, “The Phase I study will focus on the detection of Salmonella in ready-to-eat (RTE) foods with Salmonella Typhimurium as a model pathogen.”
The grant helps BioDetection Instruments continue its development of an integrated system for screening of foodborne pathogens.
According to the release, “The system is based on integration of patented sample preparation technology and patent-pending self-contained microfluidic assay cartridge technology. The automated system can address the limitations of current microbial detection methods, e.g., laboriousness and tediousness (culture methods), complexity and high skill requirement (PCR), lack of sensitivity (lateral flow immuno-strip tests) or specificity (conventional ATP bioluminescence). The system will be fully automated, requiring minimal operator training.”
BioDetection Instruments is a portfolio company of VIC Technology Venture Development of Northwest Arkansas.
