AG Rutledge Approves Term Limits Ballot Title
Arkansas Attorney General Leslie Rutledge approved a substituted ballot title that will allow term limits supporters to collect signatures for a proposed constitutional amendment in 2016.
The popular name for the proposed measure is the “Arkansas Term Limits Amendment of 2016.” It would limit members of the Arkansas General Assembly to no more than three (3) two-year terms as a member of the House of Representatives or no more than two (2) four-year terms as a member of the Senate. However, the proposal also states that, in total, a person may only serve in the General Assembly no more than ten (10) years.
In the 2014 election cycle, voters approved a comprehensive ethics and term limits measure that extended General Assembly service to a maximum of 16 years in one or both chambers of the Arkansas Legislature.
Rutledge’s sign-off of the ballot title and popular name allow supporters of the term limits measure to begin collecting signatures to qualify for the 2016 general election ballot. More than 84,000 valid voter signatures are needed to qualify.
