Making the rounds to promote his autobiography, former Acxiom CEO Charles Morgan was featured by The Street for his thoughts on information technology security.

Morgan stated that security is a state of mind not following rules. He noted that we have to change our mindset in order to do a better job.

“We always spent a lot of time on the whole concept that privacy and security is a state of mind,” Morgan told The Street. “It is how you act every day, not rules you follow. It is your attitude toward protecting this important asset, which is customer data.”

Morgan discussed how Acxiom brought in Jennifer Barrett in 1991 to be the company’s first Chief Privacy Officer.

Morgan explained that something he thought would be part-time expanded into a full-time role complete with staff.

“Initially, I thought she was going to have a two day a week job and still have her regular job, but pretty soon she had a staff and today there are about four or five people at Acxiom in that role,” said Morgan.

Referring to recent data breaches, Morgan criticized the Office of Personnel Management which saw information for 21.5 million people become exposed from a government server hack because they only had “a single identification factor in its security system.”

In addition to his former role at Acxiom and his role on the board of Inuvo, Morgan is the CEO of First Orion Corp. and the author of the recently released “Matters of Life and Data.”
