Sen. Cotton: ‘Congressional Rebellion’ Could Happen Over Iran
Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Arkansas, said there could be a “rebellion” in Congress if the Obama administration puts together a deal that would allow Iran to have nuclear weapons capabilities.
Cotton, who conducted an interview with Talk Business & Politics host Roby Brock as part of KATV Ch. 7’s “Connect with Congress” series, said that a potential resolution of disapproval could get a veto-proof majority among Democrats and Republicans in the Senate chamber.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if we see an open Congressional rebellion to include Congressional Democrats,” Cotton said. “I think that many Congressional Democrats are very worried about the path the President has taken, especially in these last two or three weeks and that you’re apt to see an open Congressional rebellion and perhaps a veto-proof majority to stop the deal from going forward.”
Cotton said although final terms are not known, the administration has signaled plenty to indicate to him the eventual agreement is a “bad deal.” With that, he said open inspections and verifications won’t be enough to rein in Iranian nuclear capabilities, nor will it convince him to vote for the international agreement.
“No, I cannot imagine supporting any kind of agreement and I’ll use everything in my power to stop it because a nuclear-armed Iran is the gravest threat we can face.”
Cotton also weighed in on other aspects of the Iranian negotiations, a potential embassy in Cuba, Donald Trump’s upcoming Arkansas GOP appearance, and a new immigration bill that he has filed in response to “sanctuary” cities.
