An event this weekend will give people an opportunity to have good food, meet some politicians and raise money for a worthy cause, one of the event coordinators said this week.

The annual Weiner Pig Roast will be at 6 p.m. Saturday (April 4) at the old Weiner High School gym with proceeds for the event going to the Miracle League of Jonesboro.

The league gives children with special needs an opportunity to play baseball, softball and other sports at a complex in Jonesboro.

The $2.8 million complex opened last October with a rubberized field and special play areas for children with autism, content partner KAIT reported last year.

Most if not all of the money raised for the project came from private donations and volunteers. Michelle Cadle, one of the coordinators for the event, said the people in the Poinsett County town have taken the cause up to help raise money for the project.

In addition to the Pig Roast, an auction has been held the past two years.

Cadle said the auction last year raised nearly $50,000 with local businesses and groups donating items. Among the items included art and duck calls.

The event has also drawn the interest of politicians in recent years.

In the past, several federal and state politicians as well as candidates have attended the event. The event has been considered the Northeast Arkansas version of the Gillett Coon Supper, typically held each January.

Cadle said several politicians including Reps. Rick Crawford, R-Jonesboro, and Bruce Westerman, R-Hot Springs; Attorney General Leslie Rutledge and Land Commissioner John Thurston have signed up to attend the event Saturday.

Tickets are $20 and information can be obtained by looking at the group’s Facebook page.
