It was a busy September as Northeast Arkansas legislative candidates raised money for their campaigns, just weeks before the general election.

Wednesday was the deadline for candidates to turn in their Sept. 1 through Sept. 30 campaign finance reports to Secretary of State Mark Martin.

Of the reports turned in by Thursday, there was a money battle in several legislative districts.

In District 52, Republican Dwight Tosh raised more money than Democrat Radius Baker by a two-and-a-half to one margin.

Tosh also had a $32,918 to $28,012.63 cash advantage for Baker in the district, which covers Craighead, Independence, Jackson and Poinsett counties.

It was also busy in nearby District 53, as Republican Dan Sullivan outraised Democratic State Rep. Homer Lenderman.

As of Thursday, Sullivan had a $10,000 cash advantage over Lenderman, who is seeking a third and final term in the state House.

Democrats outraised Republicans in two other contested races – Districts 58 and 59.

In District 58, incumbent State Rep. Harold Copenhaver, D-Jonesboro, raised $30,500 in September, outpacing challenger Brandt Smith who raised $3,695. However, Smith had a $25,077.32 to a $21,432.92 cash-on-hand advantage.
