JBS S.A. announced plans to complete its acquisition of Brooks, Alberta-based XL Foods' US beef processing operations.

The plant located in Brooks was formerly owned by JBS USA competitor, Tyson Foods Inc. who sold the large Canadian operation to XL Foods in 2008 after several years of losses.

The Canadian division of JBS has acquired the Lakeside processing plant with a capacity of 4,000 head per day, as well as the a beef packing plant in Calgary, a feedlot in Brooks and surrounding acreage to support the feedlot operations.

JBS USA, a subsidiary of JBS S.A., owns beef packing plants in Omaha, Neb. and another in Nampa, Idaho and ranks tied with Cargill for the No. 2 market share position in the U.S. packer industry, slightly behind Tyson Foods in terms over slaughter capacity.

JBS USA has idled the plant in Nampa and says there are no immediate plans to re-open the facility.
