Samaritan Center to Host Voter Registration Drive
ROGERS (Sept. 20, 2012) –  In 2008, six million Americans told the US Census Bureau that they did not vote because they did not know how to register, or they missed their state’s voter registration deadline.
In recognition of the inauguration of a new holiday, National Voter Registration Day, on Tuesday, Sept. 25 the Samaritan Community Center (SAMCC) is hosting a Voter Registration Drive. Non-partisan information and voter registration assistance will be available in both English and Spanish.
“Because we serve our community’s most vulnerable, we know that all too often their voices are not heard when it comes to elections,” says Mary Mann, director of community relations for the center. “That’s why we’ve joined the national movement to help make sure all voices are heard this November. Voting is a responsibility we have to each other as citizens and as community members. We want to make it easy for people to exercise that right and responsibility by helping them register to vote.”
On Tuesday voter registration tables, manned by community volunteers and SAMCC staff, will be set-up at both Samaritan centers – 1211 W. Hudson Road in Rogers, and 1300 N. Thompson Ave., Ste. G (Harp’s Plaza) in Springdale from 7:30 am-6:30 pm.  Anyone wishing to register may stop by and fill out a form, which the Center staff will mail-in following the drive, or pick up a form to take home, fill out and mail personally.
“We want to make it easy for people to just drop in on their way to or from work, or during their lunch hour,” said Mann. “We are hoping that by holding a public drive for this one day, it will encourage someone who has wanted to register to take five minutes to drop by one of our centers to do so.”
This is the inaugural year for National Voter Registration Day. Its theme is simple. Register in September, make it count in November. SAMCC is partnering with more than 700 organizations nationwide for the day. Partners include major technology companies, retailers, voter registration and activation groups, and nonprofits from across issue areas. More information on National Voter Registration Day is available online at www.nationalvoterregistrationday.org.
“We want to remind everyone that the Samaritan Community Center is a nonprofit, non-partisan community service organization, and while we will have members of local political parties serving as volunteers to staff our registration tables, there can be no campaigning by or for any political candidate or any political party within 100 feet of our centers,” said Mann.
