Pet product sold at Target recalled
A pet treat product sold at Target Stores between April and September has been recalled by Kasel Associated Industries because of possible Salmonella contamination.
The Boots & Barkley six-count, 5-in. American Beef Bully Sticks affected by the recall was packaged in a clear plastic bag that is marked with the bar code 647263899189, according to the Federal Drug Administration.
Kasel Industries is recalling all lot numbers because the following lot codes tested positive for Salmonella through analysis by the Colorado Department of Agriculture:
BESTBY20APR2014DEN, BESTBY01JUN2014DEN, BESTBY23JUN2014DEN, and BESTBY23SEP2014D
The FDA said the recall came after a routine sampling by the Colorado Department of Agriculture revealed the finished products contained the Salmonella bacteria. The Denver-based company ceased production and distribution of the beef sticks while FDA and the Kasel try to determine the source of the contamination.
Salmonella can sicken animals that eat contaminated products. But food safety advocates caution that humans are also at risk if they handle contaminated products and don’t wash their hands.
No other products made by Kasel Associated Industries are included in the recall, and no illnesses have been reported in animals or humans in connection with the product.
