Wal-Mart offers cardholders gas discount
Wal-Mart Stores Inc. said Wednesday (Aug. 29) it will give a 15-cent per gallon discount to customers who pay with the retailer’s credit card or a Walmart MoneyCard. Patrons who use a Walmart gift card will get 10 cents off at more 1,000 gas stations run by Wal-Mart or Murphy USA.
The Great Gas Rollback begins Aug. 31 and runs through Dec. 24 as Wal-Mart seeks to attract more traffic into its stores ahead of holiday shopping period.
"It's a busy time for our customers. They are sending their kids back to school and planning for Labor Day travels, and the holidays are just around the corner. As gas prices get higher, these tasks get tougher," said Duncan Mac Naughton, chief merchandising and marketing officer for Walmart U.S. "We're here to help. Last year, we saved our customers nearly $60 million with the gas rollback program. This year, we're excited to provide an even bigger discount on fuel that will help them save more money when they need it the most."
Last week, Wal-Mart said it would bring back layaway a month early, giving U.S. shoppers under economic pressure more time to pay for holiday gifts.
The "gas rollback" follows a similar program offered in 2011 which gave customers a savings of 10 cents per gallon.
