Delfeayo Marsalis headlines Jazz Eureka Festival
EUREKA SPRINGS — Jazz trombonist Delfeayo Marsalis, a member of the famous New Orleans family of jazz musicians with the same name, will prove his place in the family lineage when he headlines the annual Jazz Eureka Festival Sept. 22.
This year’s fesival include three days and nights of musical performances, Sept. 20-22.
Delfeayo Marsalis is brother to musicians Branford, Wynton and Jason and is son of Ellis Marsalis. He has made his own name as a producer and accomplished trombonist with a fluid technique and inventive modern-mainstream style. Jazz fans can see him in concert at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 22 at The Auditorium in Eureka Springs. Tickets are $15 and $20 in advance and $20 and $25 on the day of the show.
The Jazz Eureka Festival kicks off with a Sept. 20 performance by Flamenco & Gypsy guitarist Ron Radford at The Auditorium. Radford is a protégé of the legendary Carlos Montoya, and has lived and traveled in Spain where he immersed himself in the musical wisdom of the Gypsy Flamenco guitar masters.
Free music in Basin Spring Park starts Friday at 1 p.m. with the Matt and Gus 4-Tet, a father and son guitar duo from Harrison, followed the Claudio Burson Trio. The Jazz Mafia featuring Cal Jackson, Richard Bruton, Clare Starr, Darren Novotny, Jack Martin and Ken Everts will play from 4-6 p.m.
The day closes with Ol’ Blue eyes, A Tribute to Frank Sinatra with Tom Tiratto and The Fayetteville Jazz Collective, and 18-piece big band. Tiratto, an actor and vocalist, has devoted the last 12 years to recreating the music and glamour of the late, great Frank Sinatra. The show will be at 7:30 p.m. at the Inn of the Ozarks Convention Center. Ticket prices vary.
Saturday’s music in the park starts at noon. The lineup include the duo of Cherry Brooks and Cal Jackson, Richard Brunton of the Jazz Mafia performing with the Richard Brunton Quintet, Trio DeJaniero and a jazz trio featuring vibraphonist/percussionist and Fayetteville native Adams Collins.
Jazz Eureka wraps up on Sunday afternoon with two last free performances in Basin Spring Park: The Saxtones, all members of the Arkansas Winds Community Concert Band, and the Missouri State Jazz Ensemble. The latter has been featured at the Mexico Intvitational Jazz Festival, on the night stage at the Montreux Jazz Festival, the Anglo International Music Festival in Lodon and the Mobile Collegiate Invitational Jazz Festival, and many other Jazz events.
