Tyson Prepared Foods in South Hutchison, Kansas  is recalling about 12,060 pounds of pizza topping products because of mislabeling.

The Food Safety Inspection Service notice of recall indicates the packages distributed to food service customers were labeled as beef, but also contain pork and an undeclared allergen.

Tyson Foods spokesman Gary Mickelson said the pork contains soy, which is a potential allergen not identified on the incorrect beef label. He said the mislabeling occurred on the inner packages, and the master case was properly labeled.

“There have been no illnesses or other health concerns reported as a result of this mislabeling; however, the voluntary recall is being initiated as a precaution,” he said.

The recalled product was produced for restaurants or institutional food operations and was not sold to retail grocery stores.

“We are in the process of accounting for the affected product and placing it on hold,” Mickelson said.

The problem was reported by a product purchaser, according to the Food Safety Inspection release.

Tyson Foods is the largest supplier of pepperoni and pizza toppings to the food service industry. Each year Tyson produces enough pepperoni slices to cover 23,000 acres.
