Sparks nurse receives DAISY award for surgery care

Rebekah Harmon, a registered nurse, was recently honored for her compassionate care as a nurse in the Intensive Care Unit at Sparks Regional Medical Center.
Harmon, who has been a nurse for the last 16 years, was nominated for a DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses by a patient’s wife. Harmon in June cared for the patient following triple by-pass and valve replacement surgery on his heart.
“This is not a single story, but 12-plus hours of non-stop patient and family care that exemplifies the career of nursing,” the spouse wrote in her nomination letter. “Her [Harmon] note to my husband on the heart pillow ‘Thank you for allowing me to care for your new heart,’ says it all.”
The award is part of the DAISY Foundation’s program to recognize the super-human efforts nurses perform every day. The not-for-profit DAISY Foundation is based in Glen Ellen, Calif., and was established by family members in memory of J. Patrick Barnes. Patrick died at the age of 33 in late 1999 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), a little known but not uncommon auto-immune disease.
