Walton Lifetime Health Complex at John Brown University in Siloam Springs has largely completed a $5 million renovation.

The renovation project included a new entrance allowing for better access to the fitness center, tennis courts, community trail and an expanded parking area. Also, the project “expanded the cardio and light weight areas, upgraded fitness equipment for cardio and strength training, updated and extended the HVAC system, renovated existing and added new locker rooms, refurbished the pool mechanical systems and installed a new decking in Hub White Pool,” according to a news release.

Renovation of the 71,490-square-foot health complex started in fall 2015 and has been largely completed, said Tarah Thomas, communications specialist for JBU. The project, which will be officially completed in August, took place within the existing footprint of the facility. Some of the remaining work includes interior detail and railing improvements.

“The WLHC is one of the primary ways JBU engages with our community through wide-ranging fitness programming, local swim team programs, summer camps and connection to the trails,” JBU President Chip Pollard said in the release. “We are deeply grateful to our many friends and financial partners who helped make this project a reality.” Supporters included Simmons Foods, Soderquist Family Foundation, Chapman Trusts, Mabee Foundation, City of Siloam Springs, La-Z-Boy Foundation, Nabholz Charitable Foundation, McKee Foods and Arvest Bank.

“Because of the facility revamp, we hope to add new recreational programs to the already existing programs,” athletic director Robyn Daugherty said in the release. “The improved facility will provide a welcoming environment for the JBU family and the Siloam Springs’ community in helping promote health and wellness.”

Serving university students and staff and Siloam Springs residents, the health complex has more than 300 members, Thomas said. It opened in 1988.

The renovation was part of the university’s $125 million Campaign for the Next Century, which includes $32 million for new facilities and renovations. JBU has raised $96.7 million and plans to complete the campaign in 2019, JBU’s centennial. On Wednesday (Dec. 7), the university will celebrate the renovation project with a ribbon cutting.
