Tolbert: Latest Hays Hypocrisy Ad Touts NRA Membership, Protecting 2nd Amendment Rights

In what has now become perhaps the closest race in the state, Democratic Second District Congressional candidate Patrick Henry Hays has another ad out that continues to show he will say just about anything to get elected. In this latest ad, Hays appears in his garage with his pickup truck in the background in front of a table of guns that he is cleaning.

“These are my guns. I am a proud member of the NRA and I will protect our Second Amendment rights,” says Hays.

The problem is Hays’ record is pretty laughable on protecting Second Amendment rights. Hays is the only candidate running in Arkansas to receive an F from the NRA. That is almost unheard of. You basically have to try hard to get an F.

By contrast, the NRA gave French Hill an AQ rating – the highest rating a non-incumbent can get – and endorsed his campaign.  They have spent thousands on mailers and ads attacking Hays. Hill is their guy in this race.

So you have Hays saying he is “proud” to be a member of a group that gave him an F and endorsed his opponent. Seriously?

“Patrick Henry Hays is a 26-year, career politician who will say anything — and lie — to hide from the truth. Hays has an ‘F’ rating from the NRA, calls Obama his ‘star quarterback,’ and supports Obama’s liberal gun agenda,” said Hill for Congress campaign manager Jack Sisson.

When Hays was mayor of North Little Rock, he was one of only six Arkansas mayors to join then New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s “Mayors Against Gun Violence” campaign. Hays’ record is one of the most liberal of any Arkansas politician on gun control. That’s a simple and provable fact, which is why his latest ad is so ridiculous in my opinion.

“I am proud of my NRA endorsement and ‘A’ rating. While my opponent supports more government mandates and President Obama’s liberal gun agenda, I will hold President Obama accountable and fight for common sense, Arkansas values,” said French Hill.

Hays is a liberal who is trying to look like he is not in order to get elected. Below is the Hays’ ad touting his pro-gun stances and the NRA ad that has aired with a pretty powerful counter-message.
