The municipal filing period ended Friday with even more contested races developing for the fall. Several mayoral races developed Friday, creating nearly 40 contested races in Northeast Arkansas for the November general election.

Two candidates – Rob Young and Raymond Pettus, II – filed to run for mayor in Corning. The pair join incumbent Dewayne Phelan and challenger J.H. Ermert in the crowded race.

In Craighead County, James McMasters filed Friday to run for mayor at Bay, joining incumbent Darrell Kirby in the race.

The most interesting filing news was in Lawrence County, when a former mayor and a current mayor both filed to run for offices this year.

Walnut Ridge Mayor Don House, a former state legislator, filed to run for the Ward 2, Position 2 seat on the Walnut Ridge City Council. House will face incumbent Jeff Taylor in the fall.

Former Walnut Ridge Mayor J.R. Rogers also filed to run for the Ward 1, Position 1 seat on the council. Rogers, who is also a former state legislator, will face Wendell S. Jones in November.

Also, two former mayors – Dale Dunlap and Kevin Wright – filed Friday to run for mayor in Lepanto. The pair will be joined by incumbent Steve Jernigan in the race this fall.

To the west in Sharp County, a fourth candidate filed Friday to run for mayor in the resort town of Cherokee Village.

Wayne Clary turned in paperwork, joining Peggy R. Austin, Russell Stokes and Glenn Harris in the race, Sharp County Clerk Tommy Estes said.
