Municipal Filing Period Kicks Off

The nearly three-week marathon known as the municipal filing period kicked off Friday afternoon (July 25), with candidates turning in petitions to run in the November general election.
A total of 11 people turned in paperwork in Craighead County Friday, with five incumbent Jonesboro City Council members seeking another term.
Those filing Friday were incumbents Charles Frierson (Ward 1, Pos. 1), Dr. Charles Coleman (Ward 2, Pos. 1), Ann Williams (Ward 3, Pos. 1), John W. Street (Ward 4, Pos. 1) and Darrel Dover (Ward 5, Pos. 1).
Carol Duncan also filed Friday to run for Jonesboro City Attorney. Duncan is running for the seat, currently held by Phillip Crego, who is not seeking another term.
Brookland Mayor Kenneth Jones filed Friday to seek a second term this November. Other Brookland filings include Lorie Elmore and Wilson Shipman, who are running for Brookland City Council Ward 2, Pos. 1 and Ward 3, Pos. 1, respectively.
Other notable Craighead County filings include Linda Simpson, who is running for City Clerk/Treasurer in Lake City.
In Jackson County, an incumbent also filed to run for mayor in Newport.
David Stewart turned in paperwork to run as an independent this fall. Stewart joins Republican Charles Landrum, who filed earlier this year in the party filing period.
Steve Howard also filed for Newport City Attorney as an independent, while Andy May filed as an independent to run for Ward 4, Pos. 2 on the Newport City Council.
