Stephens Media columnist Steve Brawner offers his take on the difficulty some elected officials have in transitioning from campaign mode to governing mode.
In particular, he highlights the "no new tax" pledge signed by several Arkansas State Representatives and the complications those pledges provided.
Legislators shouldn’t be performing mental and moral gymnastics based on some pledge they signed before the session. Nor should they lock themselves into inflexible positions before they even start debating the issues. They should simply solemnly swear to faithfully discharge their duties. And voters should judge them based on that.
