Recently, a group of business and civic leaders came to hear about an audit. No, it wasn’t how to avoid one after you have filed your taxes, but rather a waste audit.
Robert Hunter is THE expert on waste audits. He’s been doing it for 17 years and says he’s dug in a lot of trash cans. As the recycling and marketing manager for the solid waste division of the Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality, he advises to take a wise but simple approach to eliminating waste. Reduce before you recycle. As he puts it, know what’s coming in your front door and what’s going out the back door and how to move it on.
For example, Hunter recommends purchasing minimized packaging and having deliveries shipped in returnable containers. Simple strategies that save resources, extend landfill life, and decrease disposal costs.
